How to Manage Arthritis During Winter

Arthritis, the leading cause of joint pain in the United States, is a progressive, chronic condition that causes inflammation, swelling, pain, and stiffness in one or more joints. Winter weather conditions can increase arthritic pain. Many arthritic patients and several studies note that the cold temperatures, precipitation, and decreased barometric pressure of winter contribute to greater joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.

In preparation for the winter weather and the potential of increased arthritic pain, here are 8 tips to manage your arthritis during the winter months:

  1. Utilize heat at the start of your day to increase joint mobility and decrease pain before engaging in daily activities. Use a heating pad or blanket and take a warm bath or shower in the morning.

  2. Use arthritic gloves that provide compression and warmth to your aching hands, particularly when going outside.

  3. Bundle up when going outside with a winter coat, hat, gloves, and warm boots to protect your joints from the cold air, which can contribute to stiffness and increased pain.

  4. Wear appropriate footwear with good traction and be watchful of ice and slick surfaces to prevent falls.

  5. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Consume the proper amount of Vitamin D and Calcium to support and maintain bone and cartilage health. Stay sufficiently hydrated and eat anti-inflammatory foods.

  6. Maintain a healthy weight to take pressure off of joints. Losing three pounds can take as much as nine to twelve pounds of pressure off your knees when walking.

  7. Access a warm water pool at our physical therapy clinic as a patient or wellness member. Exercising in warm water helps to reduce swelling, relieve pain, and take pressure off of your joints while still maintaining strong, loose muscles and joints.

  8. Stay active and exercise, which strengthens the muscles around your joints, maintains bone strength, and keeps your joints flexible and mobile. Work with one of our physical therapists, who will create an individualized exercise program to improve your strength, coordination, and balance safely and gradually.
